Handbook for music lessons
We receive a wide variety of questions about music lessons every day. That is why we have started to compile a handbook in which we, together with experienced teachers, try to answer them as precisely as possible. Over the next few weeks, we will be presenting topics from articles in the handbook here in the blog.
How do I start learning to sing?

Singing is a very personal matter. Many people would like to sing, but don't dare.
In the article Learning to sing for beginners we have compiled many relevant questions for singing beginners. Dominique Trautweiler, who teaches singing in Zurich, gives you tips on how best to start learning to sing.
She recommends the following first steps:
Have fun.
The important thing is that you enjoy singing. Choose songs that you like. Be willing to experiment with your voice and don't be afraid to make mistakes. Dare to improvise with different sounds and words. This will help you gain confidence in your voice and you can find out for yourself what works well and where you could perhaps use a little help.
Learn to warm up your voice.
You can warm up your voice in different ways. You often start with a scale or simple melodies to suit your mood. It is important that you warm up the entire range of your voice (from the lowest to the highest note). The best person to show you good vocal exercises is a singing teacher.
Develop an awareness of your breathing and your body.
Being aware of your own body and its processes when singing can help to overcome technical and other difficulties. There are many exercises that can be integrated into singing lessons. The focus is particularly on support and a free flow of breath.
Develop a feeling for your own voice
Trusting your own instincts when singing is very important. This will prevent you from overstraining your voice and ensure that you take a break at the right time, for example. If you have been hoarse for a long time or are struggling to produce any sound at all, it is definitely advisable to consult a specialist. Instrumentor works together with the Sing Stimm Zentrum in Zurich (see partners), where you can contact them at any time.
Relax your jaw
Sometimes it helps a lot to relax the jaw. A relaxed jaw helps you to let sounds flow freely and produce a clear sound.
Use your resonance chambers
And don't forget:
There are many different techniques and opinions on the subject of singing. Try out different ones and find out which ones suit you best. In the end, it should feel good when you sing. That is the most important thing! Of course, singing teachers can help you with this.
We will continue to add to the handbook in the future. If you have any questions about music lessons, please feel free to send them to us.
Maybe you can even give us the topic for the next article?
